Vincent Van Gogh


One of the most widely recognised painters of all time, Van Gogh was virtually unknown during his lifetime.  Pupils will look at his life and work in this unit and attempt to paint one of his pictures using his distinctive style of expressive brushstrokes.

Follow on/alternate lesson - paint a self portrait in a van gogh style

Using their knowledge of Van Gogh swirls, dashes, brushstrokes and colour, pupils attempt to produce a self portrait in the style of van gogh as per the "How to paint in a Van Gogh style" video above.  Proportions of the face are introduced to the pupils - click on the video link below for a helpful introduction.  7 minute portrait video is handy to watch if your portrait is to include shading before painting.
