S2 Clay slab Construction Project - Buildings

Clay Slab Construction

 Buildings

Pick at least 2 local buildings that you like parts of to use for
your design.

Pick at least 5 detail features that you like which you want
to be a part of your building.

Design a front view as well as a side view of your
building.

If you get finished, try drawing your building in 3D using 2 point perspective.

You will need to have interesting surface detail if you want to
make your clay model to be interesting to look at.

Slab Construction

Look at the pictures opposite for an illustration of how you construct your building.

Roll the clay using a rolling pin and wooden guide rails.

Make Sure that all the slabs of clay that you are using are of around the same thickness.

Make sure that your building is not too tall to stand upright.

Cut your walls to size using the guide rails as a ruler and a clay tool.

Put the majority of detail that you want on the walls on before you stick the walls together.

Roughen the clay and use slip when you stick the walls together.  Don't be too heavy handed otherwise you will lose your crisp corners.

Here are the finished buildings. Pupils either used glazes and fired their constructions twice, or painted them with a gloss coat of PVA.
