Composition and the Rule of Thirds

Pupils look at the Rule of Thirds in Art, Photography and Film and using their knowledge of the rule of thirds, produce a piece of art that has a clear focal point.  In the process, they will develop their visual observation skills as well as look at ellipses and curves in nature.  They will also look at the work "Surprise" by Henri Rousseau and by discussing the visual elements of his work, feed some of the techniques that he uses into their own work.

Task 1: On A3 sugar paper sketch one of the parrots from the selection of images you have been provided.  The eye of the parrot should be place on one of the 4 intersecting points on the 9 square grid of the rule of thirds.
Task 2:  Using the techniques you have learnt in the leaf drawing video produce 4 different leaf drawings in pencil on white paper.  Each leaf should be from a different plant in the Art room. Your time limit for each drawing is 5 minutes.
Task 3: Returning to your A3 image, use your skills at drawing leaves to make a busy full forest background behind your parrot.
Following your demonstration on how to use oil pastels effectively, work in colour to your image.
Task 4: Using the visual element cards, in groups of two, discuss how effective Rousseau has been at each of the cards you have been given - max time 5 minutes for each card.  Write your responses in sentences.
